Basic Steps to Perfectly Devein Your Shrimp
When you prepare shrimps for cooking, deveining them would probably be not too appealing. However, deveining a shrimp is actually easy. All you need is patience and a little kitchen tool called shrimp deveiner. You might even find shrimp deveining enjoyable to do because you will have perfectly prepared shrimps that are clean and good to look at.
The shrimp’s veins are actually its digestive tract. That black substance that runs along its backside sometimes contains grit and other sandy substance. It would be okay to leave it but when cooked, the shrimp would have a little gritty taste. That is why most people opt to remove them primarily for presentation purposes and secondarily for taste and hygiene.
Choose the Best Shrimp to Devein
The quality of the shrimp is essential in order for you to devein it perfectly. If you live in a place where you can find freshly caught shrimps, then those would be the easiest to devein. However, if you buy your shrimp from a seafood shop, choose the frozen ones. Thawed shrimps would be very difficult to devein because their meat would be very tender.
Basic Deveining Preparation Stage
So your shrimps are ready. The next step in deveining them would be to find a large bowl where you can put ice water or ice cubes. You have to place the shrimps in it so that their meat would not degenerate quickly.
Because you will have to devein the shrimps one by one, soaking them in ice water or ice cubes would preserve their freshness. It would also be faster to devein shrimps that are fresh.
Choose the Right Tool for Deveining
The tools that you will use for deveining shrimps are important. Some experts can do shrimp deveining with their fingers. However, if you are just beginning to learn how to devein a shrimp it would be best to use a shrimp deveining knife.
If you plan to devein a shelled shrimp, you can use a standard deveining knife. These kinds of deveiners are small cutleries that have pointed tip. You can buy them from any kitchen utility store.
On the other hand, if you want to cook your shrimp with their shells still intact, you can still devein them using a serrated deveining knife. The serrated tip of these deveiners would cut through the shell allowing you to pick the shrimp gut.
The Actual Shrimp Deveining Process
The final step is the actual shrimp deveining process. Remember don’t brood when you damage the meat of a few shrimp, it would take a little time to get used to shrimp deveining process.
After removing the shell, hold the shrimp back side up. With your shrimp deveining knife, make a light cut along the line where you can find the shrimp vein. The back side of the shrimp will open up and the veins would be exposed.
There are two ways to remove the vein. The first method is to pick it with your deveining knife and pull the shrimp gut very gently. However, if your shrimp is really fresh, you can put them under flowing water and the vein would come off by itself.
The steps would be the same if you devein shrimps with shells. Just use a different type of deveiner with serrated tips. You have to cut through the shell and then proceed to make a light cut along its back side.
