Where to Buy
Types of Shrimp Deveiners

Your Little Assistant in Degutting the Shrimp

A shrimp deveiner is typically a kitchen utility used to remove the “vein” of the shrimp. If you plan to buy a shrimp deveiner, you should go to the cutlery section of any department store and you will find different types deveiners of all shapes and sizes.  It would be more convenient for you though to shop online, because these kinds of kitchen tools are widely marketed in online market places and auction sites.

Uses of Shrimp Deveiner

Some people want to thoroughly clean their shrimps before cooking.  So, aside from de-shelling the shrimps and removing those tiny flippers and tails, they also remove the thin black line found at the back of shrimps.

This black line is called vein but it is not actually shrimp vein.  It is the shrimp’s gut or intestine.  Usually, when the shrimp is large, its gut will contain a little sand.  That is why some opt to remove it for hygienic and aesthetic purposes.

Shrimps that have their veins removed before cooking will have pinkish white color and are generally more refined when processed.  That is why for the meticulous cook and for industrial shrimp processing, removing the veins is a must.

Types of Manual Kitchen Grade Shrimp Deveiners

Kitchen grade shrimp deveiner is the most common type that you can find in the market.  They belong to the family of your kitchen utensils, so they are widely available in every kitchen utility store.

Most hand held shrimp deveiners are made from stainless steel with rubberized or plastic handles.  They don’t have sharp edges but they do have very pointed tip that is perfectly curved to extract the annoying shrimp vein.

Some varieties have serrated tip designs which could serve as deveiner and de-sheller at the same time.  These types of shrimp deveiners would be more useful because you will have a two in one shrimp processing tool.

Other shrimp deveiners are made from pure plastic materials.  Others are Teflon based while most are made from common commercial hard plastics.  Plastic shrimp deveiners are naturally not that durable compared to their steel cousins.  But these deveiners are more lightweight and can be handled more easily.

It is very important to note that when you devein a shrimp, you need to have very nimble hands.  This is to avoid undue damage to the shrimp meat.  A plastic shrimp deveiner, because of its lightweight composition, would be ideal for the job.  You will be able to handle the shrimp more easily and deveining would be a walk in the park, so to speak.

You can also find specially designed shrimp deveiners that are structured like your ordinary scissors.  They have handles just like a regular scissor to help you grip the deveiner easily.  It also has two pointed tips.  One tip can be used for deveining the shrimp while the other one is designed for de-shelling.

A typical plastic deveiner would cost from 1 dollar to five dollars, while stainless steel shrimp deveiners cost around $10-12 each.  Scissor type deveiners are more expensive but they can really help you out during shrimp processing.
